About Boreas Music

Boreas Music is a brand new independent classical record label based in the north of England. The aim of the label is to promote the already rich artistic activities that take place in York throughout the year and build a catalogue of chamber music, choral, vocal, and instrumental, from the Renaissance to the present day. Boreas Music is committed to promoting dynamic performances of established repertoire by well-known musicians, but is also supporting new artists and new works by contemporary composers.

Our first release was Dusk Songs. The disc’s title piece is the premiere recording of a commission from Kerry Andrew, a London-based musician who studied at York University and is now making a reputation as one of the most striking composers of her generation, and is performed by The Ebor Singers, one of York's leading chamber choirs. In 2009, following on from Dusk Songs, The Ebor Singers continue to explore contemporary British sacred music with New Horizons which featured two premiere recordings, Kerry Andrew's York Mass and Philip Moore's Pilgrimage, both commissioned to celebrate the choir's 15th anniversary in 2008.

Kerry’s The Song of Doves ended the national memorial service to commemorate the victims of the bombings on 7th July 2005, and her music has been broadcast on Radio 3 and Classic FM, and is published by OUP.  Dusk Songs was commissioned by The Ebor Singers in September 2006, aiming to provide a reflective work from the Western Church liturgy based on the late-evening service of Compline.  Featured alongside Dusk Songs are pieces by Ivan Moody (currently a postgraduate composer at York University) and James Macmillan.

Subsequent releases by Boreas Music include the powerful setting of the Requiem Mass by Spanish composer Tomas Luis de Victoria, Britten's Christmas work, A Ceremony of Carols, and Prisms of Renewal with John Scott Whiteley on the organ of York Minster.
